The Moradokmai theatre troupe from Thailand did not know when they flew to Manchester to take part in the Contacting the World Festival that in addition to their performance
at Contact on Saturday 14th July 2012 they would also be performing for the Thai Olympic team who are being hosted by Manchester City Council in the run up to the Olympics.
Ten members of the Thai theatre troupe ranging in age from 11 to 51 will be staging a performance of traditional Thai music, theatre and dance on Sunday 15th July 2012 at the Park Inn Manchester as part of a welcome reception for the Thai Olympic group comprising 20 athletes from the sports of judo, archery and boxing and visiting officials from the Sports Authority of Thailand.
Moradokmai will also be appearing at Mint Fest in Kendal and the Blaze Festival in Preston, both included in the Cultural Olympiad, as part of their UK tour in September, organised by Hazel Roy, a Manchester based theatre director who directs with the company in Thailand.
Members of the troupe, whose home was destroyed in the floods that swept through Thailand last year, live in a 60 strong eco community in rural Thailand and run a free residential theatre school teaching both traditional Thai and Western art forms. A benefit held at Contact in March this year, raised 1.5k towards their re-building fund.
